Solon Future Problem Solvers Succeed at State Bowl; Qualify for Internationals in JuneMonday, April 25, 2016
The 73 Solon students competing at the 2016 Future Problem Solving State Bowl hosted here in Solon at the Middle School captured 24 individual and team awards. Two Solon FPS teams and four individual students qualified for the upcoming International Competition at Michigan State University in June.
“Solon FPS had a very successful weekend,” said Solon’s FPS advisor Sabrina Tirpak. “Students from Orchard, SMS and SHS won numerous awards in several categories.”
The students invited to represent Ohio at the International Competition are: from Solon High School Justin Prindle, Joseph Feng, Vikas Jain, Cyrus Young, Jake Adelstein, Lauren Tucker, Ryan Ebenstein and Daniel Lin; from Solon Middle School Gina Kong and Gurnoor Majhail; and from Orchard Helen Otterman and Iris Yu.
Overall, Solon students won the following awards at the state competition:
Global Issues Problem Solving (Team):
Senior Division (grades 10-12): Justin Prindle, Joseph Feng, Vikas Jain and Cyrus Young (first); Jake Adelstein, Lauren Tucker, Ryan Ebenstein and Daniel Lin (second); and Connor Strobel, Madeleine Burland and Hannah Edelman (third).
Solon Middle School Writers Excel at Regional Power of the Pen CompetitionMonday, April 25, 2016
Competing against 200 writers from 30 area schools, Solon Middle School’s Seventh Grade Power of the Pen team took third place at the regional tournament.
Additionally, two students – seventh grader Rachael Zhan and eighth grader Wenzhao Qui – earned “Best of the Best” awards. To earn the “Best” award, their top writing from the district competition was judged against other superior works from around the state. Their pieces will be published in the Power of the Pen Book of Winners and they will receive other “Best of the Best” prizes.
Overall, three SMS students qualified for the state tournament at the College of Wooster on May 27: Rachael Zhan, Wenzhao Qui and eighth grader Maleeha Ansari.
Deadline Extended to Friday For Pre-Orders of Summer Reading TitlesWednesday, April 20, 2016
The Solon Academic Boosters Club has extended the deadline for students in grades 8-11 to buy required summer reading books through its advance purchase program. All orders must be turned in to the Middle School office or the SHS Bookstore by Friday, April 22. Checks should be made payable to the Solon Board of Education. No orders can be accepted after Friday.
The SHS summer reading list and pre-order form is attached. This list includes all required summer reading for some of the high school’s English and social studies classes next fall.
The books marked with an asterisk on the list will have an accompanying assignment to be completed during the summer. The assignments will be posted on the school website in June.

Solon High School Summer Reading Books Now Available for Purchase from Academic BoostersWednesday, April 13, 2016
The official Solon High School summer reading list for students who will be in grades 9-12 in fall 2016 is now available. This listing includes all of the books students will need to read during the summer in preparation for some of the high school’s English and social studies classes next fall.

All of these books are available at any book store. However, families may choose to purchase the books through the Solon Academic Boosters Club and the books will be ready for pick up prior to the end of this school year. Orders and payment must be returned to the high school bookstore or middle school office by April 18. Checks should be made payable to the Solon Board of Education. Cash is also accepted.
Solon Middle School State Assessment Schedule ReminderTuesday, April 12, 2016
As a reminder, our students in grades 7 & 8 will be taking the 2016 state assessments later this month. Please find below the testing schedule for students at Solon Middle School. This schedule includes the dates for all state assessments aligned to the learning standards in the core content areas of grade 7 & 8 English/Language Arts, grade 8 Science, grade 7 & 8 Math, grade 7 & 8 Algebra I, and grade 8 Geometry.
This year, Solon Middle School students are taking the electronic version of the English/Language Arts assessments early in the day for grade 7 and in the afternoon for grade 8. They will take the paper and pencil versions of grade 8 science and all math tests in the morning. The testing window allowed by the state is short, so it is important for students to be in school on these days.
Grade 7 & 8 Algebra I and grade 8 Geometry assessments are end-of course assessments for high school graduation requirements.
Students are reminded to get a good night’s sleep and eat a healthy breakfast prior to each assessment.
Join Solon Middle School For An Evening of Creative Connections on April 6Friday, April 01, 2016
You are invited to a very “specials” evening at Solon Middle School on April 6 from 6:30-8 p.m. The first-ever SMS Creative Connections Night offers an interactive glimpse at the wide range of opportunities provided through the specials programs in seventh and eighth grade.
The evening is an excellent opportunity for sixth grade students and families especially to look ahead to the exciting specials programming they will participate in at SMS.
The evening will feature:
• Orchestra and jazz band instrumental performances
• Strolling vocal music performances
• Art exhibits, visual art interactions and make-it-take-it projects
• Technology interactions, including stop-motion animation
• Industrial technology and sewing demonstrations
• Appetizer samples

SMS Science Olympiad Teams Take First and Second at RegionalsMonday, February 22, 2016
With a one-two finish at regionals, both Solon Middle School Science Olympiad teams qualified for the Science Olympiad state tournament in April.
In capturing first and second place, the SMS teams earned 13 first place medals, 11 second place medals and nine third place medals in the 23 competition events.
SMS team members earned medals in the following events:

SMS Students Earn Power of the Pen District MedalsMonday, February 22, 2016
Writing under pressure and against tough competition, Solon Middle School students successfully competed at the district Power of the Pen tournament this month.
The SMS seventh grade team earned third place. Individually, three students ranked in the top 15, with seventh graders Kristin Kim and Rachael Zhan earning fifth and 10th place respectively and eighth grader Jess Hrich placing 11th.
Overall, 150 seventh and eighth grade students from 14 schools competed at the district competition.
